The 2022 BNP Paribas Open Is Underway; Here Are Our Highlights!
Posted by Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics on Mar 24th 2022
The top tennis players in the world are once again assembled in Indian Wells right on schedule for the first time in three years, and Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics is super hyped with everything that's going on in the world of tennis.
This year has proven to be anything but typical. We are still recovering from the effects of the pandemic, and distant events happening on the other side of the world have caused long ripples that affect everyone in unsuspected ways. However, the sports community is once again doing everything they can to prove how resilient we are, and how capable we are to overcome adversity.
The scenic desert settings that surround Indian Wells offer high-caliber athletes from all around the world, and tennis fans, a respite from a convoluted and rapidly changing world.
This year´s BNP Paribas Open event has attracted the majority of the world's top 10 athletes, setting the expectations incredibly high.
The WTA 1000 cup is already on the go and some players have made their initial statements on the court.
With Williams sisters still recovering from injuries, and the Australian Ashleigh Barty out of the picture, the path is open for other elite players to take the title.
The defending champion, and current number seven, is the Spanish Paula Badosa. She is a rising star brimming with confidence, as she just defeated two-time Indian Wells winner Victoria Azarenka and is set to repeat the feat once more. But there are other super athletes with great chances of snatching the title out of their hands.
After a four-month break, Naomi Osaka has been showing signs that position her as a favorite for the title. Having four Grand Slam titles under her belt, and showing great physical readiness during the Australian Open, the Japanese athlete is well-positioned to win the Indian Wells title again.
Another favorite is the Estonian Anett Kontaveit who has shown to be unstoppable in her rise in the last few months. She has made it to the final seven times since 2017, and this could be the first WTA 1000 title which is an incredible incentive.
Hopes are also high for our favorite Jelena Ostapenko. We remember the Latvian superstar, who joined the Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics Grand Slam Club right after being crowned winner at the 2017 Roland Garros. We were honored to see Ostapenko wear our exclusive magnetic bracelet for tennis matches that resulted in decisive victories in that tournament. Ostapenko has continued to prove herself worthy over and over again, winning the single category at Eastbourne in 2021 and, more recently, at the WTA 500 in Dubai with an impressive 6-0, 6-4 win over the Ukrainian Veronika Kudermetova.
We can't wait to see how she performs this time around on the hard courts of Indian Wells.
In the ATP category, we expect some old rivalries to emerge. However, even the tournament´s favorites can face serious challenges this time around.
Rafael Nadal has had a perfect season so far with a 15-0 win-loss record in 2022. He is already a three-time Indian Wells champion, and current events have played in his favor by removing the controversial Novak Djokovich from his path to victory a second time. But he must still face extremely strong players during the BNP Paribas Open.
On one hand, we don't think Daniil Medvedev will be willing to forgive Nadal a third time this year. The Russian had an incredible performance during the Australian Open, having a tangible chance of becoming the number one tennis player in the world. Unfortunately, Nadal´s unbelievable recovery during the final sets made his hopes vanish. The Spaniard repeated the feat during the Mexican Open, overpowering Medvedev once again while being crowned number one.
Medvedev will be facing Nadal once again, having another chance at the title. However, he does not have a good record on hard courts, and the Russian has never reached the quarterfinals in Indian Wells yet. But this year has been full of surprises.
The young Felix Auger-Aliassime could prove to be a surprise during the tournament. He reached the quarterfinals at the Australian Open this year, only to be eliminated by Medvedev. However, he showed his true strengths at the Rotterdam Open, defeating Murray, Norrie, Rublev, and subduing Stefanos Tsitsipas in an electrifying final match that won Auger-Aliassime his first title, showing the world he is on a mission.
The Canadian has improved his game lately and promises to offer some heart-stopping matches and a challenge to more experienced players.
We can't wait to see how this tournament turns out, but the hard court season is far from over. The Miami Open in Key Biscayne is competing against Indian Wells for becoming “The Fifth Slam. Scheduled to start a week after the Indian Wells Open, the Miami Open is offering athletes a completely different atmosphere.
While Indian Wells offers an atmosphere that could be compared to a perfect spa resort with features that remind visitors of a luxury retreat, the Miami Open offers players an extended beach party experience. Some players suggest that switching the courts to slower clay would make the Florida tournament the perfect place to kick off the clay-court season before players head to Europe, and attract more South American players who have a huge fan base in Miami.
Either way, this friendly rivalry between tournament locations ultimately benefits athletes and tennis fans. Our continuous support for these events has only grown over the years, allowing us to offer our incredibly high-quality tennis bracelets to sports enthusiasts and show our support to our favorite players.
