Jeffrey Scott Aims East for the Western & Southern Open
Posted by Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics on Jul 21st 2017
Jeffrey Scott Fine Magnetics is Ohio-bound as our staff prepares the trek east for our first foray into the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. Before the Open begins, let’s take a look at what sets the Western & Southern apart from the rest.
The Nation’s Oldest Professional Tennis Tournament Played In Its City of Origin
At around 118 years old, this tournament precedes the first Super Bowl, the first Rose Bowl, the first Masters Tournament...even the first World Series! As a relatively new sport to Cincinnati at the time, the tournament was played originally at the Avondale Athletic Club (a site that now hosts Xavier University) before spending nearly 6 decades at the Cincinnati Tennis Club. Now nestled in the suburb of Mason, only 20 miles away, the Western & Southern Open continues to bring pride to the Queen City.
An Unparalleled Level of Generosity
In addition to providing a great tennis event that attracts the best players from across the world, the Western & Southern Open also specializes as a fundraising event. Since 1974, the tournament has made donations on behalf of the Men’s Tournament to Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. Over the course of more than 40 years, they’ve contributed $8.6 million and helped countless child cancer patients get the assistance they need! They’ve also raised over $1.05 million for the Barrett Cancer Center and $851,100 for the Inner City Tennis Project in the Greater Cincinnati area. That brings their total fundraising to date to just about $10 million, all while producing one of the greatest and most prestigious tennis tournaments in the nation!
One of Only Nine Elite Master’s 1000 Tournaments
In the race to the top of the ATP World Tour, every tournament on the circuit is tiered by how much they can bolster a player’s ranking. The Western & Southern Open is one of very few Elite Master’s 1000 Tournaments, the third highest tier just under the four Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP World Tour Finals themselves. That puts Cincinnati in the same group as the official ATP tournaments of Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, Madrid, Rome, Canada, Shanghai and Paris. Also, with the tournament occurring when it does, the Western & Southern Open marks the 3-month countdown to the ATP Finals.
Join us for an exciting first year at this incredible tournament, beginning August 12 in Cincinnati, OH. If you can't make it in person, be sure to catch the action of the entire tournament on the Tennis Channel and round 16 onward on ESPN2!
